Many thanks to all of my subscribers, new and old. I’m working on being more regular with my updates. I have SO MUCH to share with you.
In general life news, I’m expanding my work as a culinary consultant, so I’m doing EVEN MORE research! Paid subscribers can expect some recommendations for little secret spots coming their way.
Next week, I’m heading to California for three weeks. I get straight off the plane and head to a creative food-meets-art dining event in LA. Very excited!! (Yes, I am actually grinning as I write this - yayyy!) You can expect the full lowdown shortly afterwards.
In the meantime, eat well and have fun.

Nakizakana, Kagurazaka
Nakizakana is an izakaya that ticks so many boxes: it’s reasonably priced; it has a diverse interesting menu that’s decent quality; the environment is spacious and modern; you can go with groups or kids or even on a date; and it’s also in the central and totally charming location of Kagurazaka.
By virtue of its name, which means “Crying Fish,” seafood is the name of the game here, although meat eaters will be able to find a few options, including classic karaage (fried chicken) and menchikatsu (minced meat cutlet in breadcrumbs). The sashimi platter is an absolute must (it comes with different sauces to pair with different seafood!), and you even round off with some sushi. On a recent visit where I called by just for some sake and a snack, the seasonal otoshi was a light chilled corn soup that was delightfully refreshing.
You can book a table via Toreta. There are two other branches in Shinjuku, but I have yet to visit.
