It’s a testament to the vastness of Tokyo that some amazing neighbourhoods can still remain largely off the tourist radar… and even remain off local lists.
I’m enamoured with a neighbourhood that I only visited properly for the first time last year… and that was after eight years of living in Tokyo.
On a recent evening, I found myself strolling through a narrow alleyway lined with tiny bars and eateries. Their glowing signs poked out haphazardly between plant pots and the odd bicycle. A salaryman — sharp suit, thick silver hair swept smartly back, briefcase in hand — was stood still, chin tilted slightly upward. His face exuded utter contentment as he slowly absorbed the scene around him.
I grinned at him. “It’s a beautiful street, right?”
His mouth broadened into a half-smile, wistfulness lingering at the edges.
“I love it!” he said with conviction.
